Discover GH4STEM 100 Top Teacher: Luke Suglo Nyuvore (Serekpere – Upper West) #GH4STEM

To be a man of the law! That was what Luke wanted to be when he grew up. He dreamt about this, until, as fate would have it, he was touched by the example of his childhood hero Mr Albert Dwohona, who was an Agricultural extension officer. Mr Dwohona’s impact on Luke was such that he also decided to become an Agric extension officer. Sadly, Luke’s father died when he was in SHS 2 in Wa Secondary School. Life became tough. However Luke preserved, engaging in farm work and petty trading to finance his schooling. After successfully completing secondary school, he continued to St. John Bosco College where he majored in Mathematics and Science. After that, he was posted to his current school, Serekpere RC JHS to teach Integrated Science. He currently handles about one hundred and twenty-one students.

Luke has been a member of GAST since 2016 and attends the various workshops organized by the association in order to enrich his knowledge in STEM. As a STEM educator, Luke is inspired by his ability to impart knowledge to the younger generation. He says that teaching STEM also gives him a clear understanding of the concepts he teaches, to the benefit of himself and his students.

Luke is really motivated when his students ask questions, when they understand every lesson,  and when they perform well in tests. He also loves to make lessons practical, which he has found  arouses the interest of his students in studying science. It is also quite a bit of fun.

Luke was informed about his school’s participation in the JUNEOS Challenge by the headmaster who had also received the information from the district office. Luke led his students to prepare an experiment on the filtration of water, using principles which can be applied in the lives of students and residents to purify water for domestic use. He is confident that this experiment demonstrated by his students will draw attention to particular experiments that educators need to teach their students.

Since his participation in the JUNEOS Challenge, Luke has realized the importance of practical demonstrations during lessons where his students can use various apparatus to conduct experiments for themselves.

Luke Nyuvore hopes to become a lecturer in the future.
