EduSpots, started in 2015 as Reading Spots, a project between Ghanaian community members, pupils and teachers, and UK schools. It initially focused on providing learning resources that were accessible to entire communities in remote areas of Ghana. The ‘spots’ are all run by community members in Ghana, with committed volunteer teams opening the ‘spots’ and running activities.  In 2019 the name reading spots was changed to ‘EduSpots’, in order to better represent the goals for ‘spots’ created. They no longer focused on just reading and literacy but additionally STEM-related areas, environmental action and a host of subject areas to make an impact.

Today, EduSpots is in 40 communities creating community-led education ‘spots’, powered by solar (10 so far), whilst nurturing deeper reflection on sustainable development and leading programmes in practical STEM and literacy development. These communities include Abofour, Bolgatanga, Tamale, Bimbilla, Takoradi Airforce Base, James Camp Prison, Kodzi, Tafo, New Atuabo, Bosomadwe, Mafi Anfoe, Ejura, Tease and Gomoa-Manso just to mention a few. The initiative is making great impact in education with its 350 volunteers and 15,000 active learners.

EduSpots has a range of beneficial programmes for participants in different capacities, including Education conferences, EduLIT (literacy training programmes), EduSTEM (practical STEM education in communities), school partnerships and Online courses like Leadership and Action or Education and Development.

Interested in volunteering or donating to the EduSpots initiative or signing up for a course? Then visit the EduSpots website and pick from their diverse ways of contributing to the development of Education in Ghana.

The Global Shapers Community is a network of young people known as Shapers driving dialogue, action and change. With grassroots knowledge, a global perspective, and ambition to change the world, Shapers are confronting the most pressing issues of our time. The Global Shapers Community is made up of 428 local teams known as hubs. In Ghana there are six local hubs including the Ho Hub.

The Ho hub is made up of a diverse number of young people, including science enthusiasts, young entrepreneurs, health & media professionals, policy advocates, that work to execute innovative solutions in solving challenges to make a positive impact in their immediate community. These initiatives range from business competitions and financial literacy programs among market women, to water purification projects, digital literacy and mentorship programs in primary and secondary schools in Ho.

The Water Purification aimed at improving access to clean and safe water using locally-designed technology and civic education. The Ho community was educated on drinking water solutions, basic sanitation measures and provided a sustainable water source using a borehole.

Also, to bridge the digital divide, Ho Hub launched a virtual reality initiativeto enable students in rural communities to experience the innovations of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Using a virtual headset and a smart phone, 85 students explored the circulatory and skeletal systems of the human body.

One of their most recent projects was the “My School Tree Project” at the St.George’s Anglican School, Ho that aimed to ensure every primary child planted one tree. This was to deepen conversations and activities on environment sustainability and the fight against the negative effects of climate change which will ultimately trickle down to household levels across communities, placing them at the forefront of environmental education.

Interested in partnering with or joining the Global Shapers Community? Check out their website for more information about how to join and vital information on their activities across the country.

Before Zulaiha and her team started DIVALOPER, she noticed that only a few girls seemed to attend or participate in entrepreneurship and tech-related events. For example, at a week-long hackathon, in Tamale, she realized that out of 50 participants, only 5 were females. For Zulaiha, this was a huge problem that she believed she could help solve. DIVALOPER was born out of this desire to see more girls from the North in the tech space and created through partnerships with other people that shared in this same cause.

DIVALOPER is a community that trains and equips girls/ladies in the Northern part of Ghana in programming , digital skills and Entrepreneurship. The aim is to create opportunities for girls but not alienating boys in technology, entrepreneurship and digital skills. The amazing team at DIVALOPER believe that there is a need to get as many girls as possible, in the Northern Region of Ghana, to take up STEM careers and own STEM firms. Thus, at Divaloper girls are taught how to code during their frequent, informative and educational training sessions.

So, do you want to be a lady in the tech space? Do you want to participate in a DIVALOPER training session? Send them an email at Divaloper2019@gmail.com and make sure you don’t miss the next training!

At African Maths Initiative Ghana (AMI) Ghana the goal is to demystify the idea that Mathematics is a difficult subject. Almost everything revolves around Mathematics. Any piece of technology you use today has been made possible through advances in mathematical knowledge. Projections for a country’s growth are based on mathematical models and research in any subject requires diverse math skills. Thus, it is important that young people develop a passion for mathematics as early as possible.

AMI Ghana promotes the study of Mathematics from the basic to the tertiary levels in a unique way by bringing Ghanaian students closer to the world of mathematics and advanced technology in a practical way. To achieve this goal, AMI Ghana in collaboration with volunteers from around the world set up frequent Math Camps to engage a number of students from around the country. The Maths Camp is a part of a bigger picture to see a transformation of the teaching and learning of Maths that goes beyond calculation. As a result, students’ problem solving, critical thinking and reasoning abilities are improved through proactive teaching, mathematical activities, games and puzzles.

Are you a JHS/ SHS student passionate about Mathematics or just want to improve your Math skills? We highly recommend you connect with AMI Ghana on social media and possibly apply join the next Math Camp session!

FemafricMaths stands for Female African Mathematicians. FemafricMaths believes that when women in Math gather, amazing things happen!

Their aim is to shine a light on inspirational women in the world of math in Ghana and beyond. This inspirational initiative aims at debunking the common notion that math is difficult. The platform also show young girls all over Ghana and Africa that a career in math is achievable if only they would believe in this and work towards their goals. The remarkable thing about FemafricMaths is that it goes beyond the female agenda giving room for young men to show how they are using Math to solve everyday problems as well.

By presenting such innovative and inspiring #Mathqueens, advanced in the knowledge of maths, FemafricMaths is erasing the misconception that people studying math can only turn out to be teachers at the basic education level. In fact, from their various initiatives, like ScienceSlamGH and interviews with renowned women in the mathematical space, it is evident that Math can be applied in a plethora of ways.

For these reasons, FemafricMaths summarizes its mission as “To inspire young people about the diverse career choices available after completing a degree in mathematics through interviews with #Mathsqueens and school outreach activities”. Its vision is “to see young girls become confident to choose a career in mathematics related fields”.

So, if you’re a young girl interested in a career in Math, be sure to watch the video above, then connect with FemafricMaths on social media (Facebook, Instagram and Twitter) and let them help you explore your career options.
